The internet is buzzing over the untimely death of Elisabeth Sladen, Dr Who actress and schoolboy crush of many a fan.

Her death has made the front page of our local paper here in Telford.

Recording the blues

As part of the drive to create content for the Adipose game, I needed to record some guitar parts.  There’s a connectivity issue when trying to link a guitar to a computer to digitally record it.  Primarily the main interface for the guitar is a 3.5m jack socket, and that brings all kinds of problems.  So I went hunting round Maplins.

In the wonderous store I located a cable that seems to offer the solution – a 19.99 USB / Guitar Jack cable.  This Prosound cable works fine under Mac, windows and audacity under linux, but stalls when trying to run it using Ardour.  My plan was to use hydrogen to provide the drum track, possibly rosegarden to provide a midi bass, and record my guitar on top of that.

I hit a snag – Jack – the audio connectivity daemon – didn’t seem to recognise my card.

The Jack screenshot here shows the capture ports available from the standard stereo input (line in) on the built in sound card.  A spot of googling later and

Tried my hand at geocaching

We had a go at geocaching today… we had a lovely time walking through Habberley Valley but were unable to locate the cache, probably due to me not switching on the GPS on my phone, and it still believing it was 17 km away.

Luckily I can now see what the problem was and we should be good to go next time.

Got me a phone!

I decided yesterday to go and join the ‘real’ world and upgrade my crappy motorolla pebl for something with a little more oomph.  so I’ve gone and got a HTC Wildfire on T Mobile.  I popped into Phones 4 U, and the pressure selling began.  The sales assistant asked if I had 10-15 minutes to spare, and over an hour later I walked from the shop.

My initial quote from Orange was HTC Desire 800 mins, Unlimited text and Internet… £25

I’d been an orange customer for the best part of 8 years, and to be honest I’d never had a problem with the service they offered – it was just that T Mobile was cheaper and is effectively the same company anyway.

What dissapointed me the most was the fiasco of getting the phone in the first instance.  Visiting the phone store was so complicated, and it surprises me that so many people put up with the crappy service they get there.  It took them over an hour to try and get me on a tarrif that T Mobile offered, and after an hour, multiple phone calls to some mythical head office I left with a tarrif that was more expensive than the tarrif I was originally offered.  They sweetened the deal by giving me £90 for my old pebl, but this sort of behaviour does raise alarm bells in my head…

  1. The tariff offered by T Mobile was not instantly available
  2. The tariff I eventually got, wasn’t the tariff that was offered initially
  3. The tariff initially offered did not take into account the part exchange on the pebl.
  4. I never got to choose the colour of my phone – it’s white… I wanted graphite or grey.
  5. It took over an hour – Would I have been better to just go to a T-Mobile store?
  6. For a phone company there was a lot of loud shouty people.  I would have thought a company that is selling communication would have a better internal communication system in place than can be seen Saturday night down the boozer.
  7. Despite me saying that it was a major issue, I had to port my own number from Orange.

What I walked out with was a wildfire, 300 mins, 3000 texts and unlimited (500mb) internet.

Am I happy with the phone I got?  I think so.  It’s difficult coming from a PAYG custom basis to a contract basis.  I have no benchmark to look at.

I’m not so happy with the colour, but it ticks my major boxes..

  • Runs Android
  • Cheap Monthly running cost
  • internet access

This – to me – seems an ideal package coming from a PAYG environment.  Perhaps Orange would have liked to offer me a similar deal?  I would have probably taken it.

Get to the Chopaar!

So now hes a private citizen again, it looks like Arnold Scharzenegger is re launching him self, this time as a cartoon superhero.

The Governator will hit screens next year as part of a deal with Stan Lee . A comic book will be out soon, followed by an animated Tv show before the inevitable live action role. Here’s the trailer:

Just a point, Mr former Governor of California, Wearing of crash helmets on bikes is mandatory in the state of California,  as mentioned here . It would be terrible to think that a program that could potentially be watched by children could send out a mixed message, especially as you have apparently crashed motorcycles twice.

just a brief note that the staff here at the titanium bunker are fine. we just been busy.

Mike is currently doing lots of work with packaging within the whobuntu environment and I have been working on the collision code for Adipose.  In test levels its working more efficiently and should allow for a greater range of collisions.  This will be dead helpful for the games that come after it. I Have got sick and tired of having to watch DVDs  on my computer ( I spend all day in front of a computer, why would I want to sit on an office chair and look at a computer to watch a film  ?) so I went out last night and bought a little DVD player and a new set top box with the ability to record to Flash drive – the fact that Doctor WHo series 6 is a mere 3 weeks away is purely a coincidence 😀

erm thats it really,

oh except I saw The adjustment bureau on Thursday. Let me collect my thoughts on it before I write up a little review …
